History of the Renault FT-17 tank Berliet 37mm gun turre

The FT-17 Renault tank was the result of cooperation between the French general Estienne, who designed the tank, and the industrial Renault, who manufactured it. By October 1918, an unprecedented 7,820 Renault tanks of all types had been ordered.

Engine problems were not solved until after the end of the conflict. Many units suffered from a shortage of spare parts, and vehicles suffered from a lack of qualified mechanics. As a result, more tanks became inoperable due to mechanical failure than to combat.

Renault extended FT-17 production after the war, and these 570 additional units formed the backbone of French arms exports. These tanks were used all over the world for another quarter century, and many of them saw service in the Second World War.
