History of the US M3 Stuart / Honey light tank

The M3 Stuart light tank is the culmination of a series of light tanks which began in 1931. However, development of the M3 did not really begin until 1940 when the Armored Force was created in June.
Taking advantage of lessons from the French campaign, US designers modified the M2A4 light tank by increasing its frontal armor to 51 mm and installing an anti-aircraft machine gun on the turret. The body was extended to cover the exhausts, and the coil spring suspension was retained.

The new model was named M3 Light Tank. It had a crew of 4 men: the commander, the gunner, the pilot and his assistant. Like the M2A4, the M3 was armed with the 37 mm M5 type cannon with gyrostabilizers. The M3 was standardized in July 1940 and production began in March 1941. The M3 was standardized for production in July 1940. The first examples appeared in March 1941. The M3A1 appeared in May 1942, the M3A3 in September 1942 From 1941 due to the Lend-Lease law, the M3s were also delivered to the British. The M3, M3A1 and M3A3 models were all manufactured by American Car & Foundry Co.
