History of the Renault VAB Ultima with RPG protection
As its name suggests, the VAB "Ultima" version is the ultimate evolution of the venerable Véhicule de l'Avant Blindé, in service with the French army for over 30 years and deployed on all operations in which the army has been involved.
This latest version sees the vehicle pushed to the limit of its capabilities, and incorporates the latest evolutions developed over the past few years, including the crash programs launched as a matter of urgency for the needs of the commitment in Afghanistan. Improvements concern both firepower and human protection (eight on-board Felin fighters + two crew members).
The VAB Ultima integrates a ballistic over-armor kit, a wheel arch protection kit, an anti-IED belly box and individual mine-resistant suspension seats.
Armament includes Kongsberg's Protector TOP remotely-operated turret, fitted with either a 12.7 mm machine gun (200 rounds) or a 40 mm grenade launcher (42 rounds), enabling the gunner to operate while protected inside the vehicle. The VAB is also equipped with Sagem's SITEL communication and command system
The anti-RPG super protections are produced by AMEFO and designed in kit form by Renault Trucks Défense. These super protections protect the vehicle against rockets encountered in theaters of external operations, particularly in Afghanistan.
