History of the Churchill MK.IV Petard 290mm
The Churchill or, more officially, Infantry Tank Mk IV or A22, is a British tank used in the Second World War. It was the latest development in the infantry tank concept then in use in the British Army. It was renowned for its solid armor, and for having served as the basis for a number of special derivatives, the Hobart's Funnies.
After a difficult start, nearly 8,400 were produced and served the British Army honourably until 1952. The main modifications to the Churchill were the arming of the turret and the installation of numerous anchoring points on the sides and front of the body for the attachment of special equipment.
The traditional cannon is replaced by a 290 mm-caliber mortar (nicknamed Pe-tard) firing a special 18.140 kg projectile (flying dustbin) designed to destroy a blockhouse, a concrete shelter or a de-meure. This weapon has a range of 80 meters.
