History of the Solido-based Hummel 150 mm self-propelled engine

In mid-1942, the Waffenamt (armaments office) proposed to install the sFH. 18 L/30 on a chassis based on the modified Pz. IV, incorporating elements of the Pz. III, by the Alkett firm. The first production "Hummel" bumblebees were delivered by Alkett and Deutsche Eisenwerke and put into units in March 1943.
By the time of the Citadel offensive in summer 1943, no fewer than 100 Hummels were operational. Each Hummel carried 18 x 150 mm shells; close defense was provided by an MG 34 7.92 mm machine gun supplied with 600 rounds.
Designed as an interim solution, over 650 Hummels were produced. Under fire, it proved to be a high-performance machine, and saw action right up to the end of the conflict in the spring of 1945.
