History of the Amtank LVT (A) 1 37 mm M6
509 Amtank LVT (A)1s were produced by Food Machinery Corporation between 1943 and 1944. A 250 hp Continental W670-9A engine propelled this 14.8 ton machine to 32 km/h on the road and 6.5 knots in the water. 400 liters of gasoline allowed you to drive 200 km.
The 6 tankers were at best protected by 51 mm of steel. 6,000 rounds of 7.62 mm supplied the two Browning M1919 A4 machine guns and one M1919A5. The 37 mm M6 cannon in the turret and equipped with 104 shells armed this amphibious tank.
Deployed operationally for the first time at the end of 1943, this tracked landing vehicle was undermined by its insufficiently powerful 37 mm main armament. Thus, the LVT (A)1 was quickly supplanted by the LVT (A)4 equipped with a 75 mm cannon.
