History of the 105 mm leFH16(Sf) Geschützwagen FCM(f)
Of the fifty or so FCM 36s recovered after the armistice of Saturday June 22, 1940, twelve were recycled as self-propelled artillery engines in 1942. The Berliet 84 hp diesel engine propelled this new 12.8-ton machine at 24 km/h, with a range of up to 225 km.
The four-man crews were equipped with theFH 16 L/22 105 mm light howitzer manufactured by Krupp. This reliable and widespread weapon, weighing 1525 kg, fired a wide variety of ammunition (muzzle velocity: 395 m/s, shell weight: 14.8 kg, maximum range: 9225 m).
Although light and modest in performance, this first-generation self-propelled howitzer was the forerunner of many subsequent adaptations and developments. As such, it has the merit of having validated an innovative concept.
