History of the White scout car M3 A1
Although production of the M3A1 Scout car began in 1938, from the start of operations, its limited potential became apparent, mainly due to the limited number of seats: 8 men. In addition, this vehicle was better suited to use on roads and tracks rather than off-road.
The Scout car offered interesting firepower thanks to its 12.7 mm M2 machine gun installed at the front and its two 7.62 mm Model 1917 Browning machine guns at the rear. The 360-degree coverage of these weapons provided the flexibility of use required for a reconnaissance vehicle. An SC R506, 508 or 510 radio transmission station allowed communications.
This useful machine was used during the North African campaign. After the landing in June 1944 in Normandy, the Scout car was assigned to the MP and rear services within the US Army. The Soviet and French armies continued to make intensive use of it on the front line.
