History of the Tamiya-based Sd.Kfz.247 Ausf.A armoured vehicle

Between 1937 and 1938, Krupp produced 20 Sd. Kfz. 247 Ausf. A from L2 H 43/143 truck chassis. A Krupp M 304 3308 cm3 4-cylinder air-cooled engine developing 52 hp propelled this 5.2-ton maximum vehicle at 70 km/h. 110 liters of petrol gave a road range of 390 km.

The six-man crew was at best protected by 8 mm of steel. Devoid of any fixed armament, the "schwerer gepanzerter Personenkraftwagen" (heavy armored car) was used for two main missions: command and observation. The vehicle's operational career began on March 12, 1938, when Austria was annexed to the Third Reich, and continued throughout the Second World War.
