History of the VAB 4x4 TOP Afghanistan
The turrets from the Norwegian firm Kongsberg are equipped with a 12.7mm tele machine gun operated from the driving position and are served by the on-board radios, which are therefore called "radio gunners". These cupolas, which provide much better security for the machine gun operators, are however not a panacea, because they have a major flaw: the ammunition magazine is not accessible from the inside, and a soldier will have to get out of the vehicle to do so. replace when empty.
The increased precision which leads to a saving of ammunition and the protection provided by the system give units on VAB reinforced tactical capabilities and the aiming with image magnification also allows improved observation use.
Ultimately, the VAB-TOPs are planned to complement the four VAB-12.7 assigned to each combat section.
