History of the US M5A1 Stuart light tank

The M5 appeared in April 1942 and the M5A1 in November 1942. The latter model was the longest in production with production stopping in June 1944. The M5 and M5A1 were manufactured by Cadillac, General Motors and Massey Harris. American Bus & Foundry Co. also participated in the production of the M5A1.

Overall, more than 18,500 examples of light tanks were manufactured and used on all fronts and in all US allied armies. The M5A1 had a welded hull with a plunging glacis and a high rear like the M5. But the M5A1 was equipped with the new turret with the rear projection. Like M5, it was equipped with the Twin Cadillac Series 42 gasoline engine.
