History of the US amtank LVT (A) 4 75 mm howitzer
Nicknamed "Alligator", this amphibious tank was designed to provide significant and flexible firepower for the Pacific theater of operations. Production of the LVT(A)4 began in March 1944. This vehicle, an evolution of the LVT(2), displayed the following major modifications: an M8 type turret with an appropriate circular and an elongated hull. The US Marine Corps and Army ordered a total of 1,840 Alligators.
Six crew members were on board the Alligator, whose operational weight was just over 17 tonnes. Speeds reached were around 5 knots on water and 40 km/h on land. The 75 mm howitzer with a low initial speed (350 m/s) was supplied with 100 shells (breaking, shaped charge, phosphorus, etc.). A 12.7mm Colt-Browning M2 heavy machine gun completed the LVT(A)4's armament. The landing in the Marianas was the first engagement of the Alligator, whose service continued until the end of the conflict.
