History of the 76 mm Sherman solido base turret

In order to improve the performance of the Sherman, it quickly became necessary to equip the standard tank of the American army with a 76 mm cannon. The improvement brought by the firepower of the gun requires the outright change of the turret.
The turret, from the T23 medium tank, used as a prototype of the Pershing M26 fits perfectly with the turret ring of the M4.
The 76mm cannon has significantly greater penetration power, range and muzzle velocity than the 75mm M3 cannon. The turret is protected by a frontal mask which covers it completely and the barrel tube may or may not receive a muzzle brake (removable).

With the 76 mm cannon the Sherman still does not match the German armored vehicles but thanks to its speed of movement and its numerical superiority this armored vehicle compensates for its shortcomings.
The 76 mm turret was mounted on the M4A1, M4A2 and M4A3, some versions of which had HVSS suspensions; the total built was 8,381 examples. The 76 mm Sherman experienced its baptism of fire in Normandy and was widely used after the war.
