History of the Tank Howitzer M8 Scott 75 mm Howitzer Motor Carriage

In 1941-42, US Army tank battalions were divided into light or medium battalions. The first were equipped with M3/M5 light tanks and the second with M3/M4 medium tanks.
In order to provide mobile artillery support for the light battalions, it was decided to create a light self-propelled howitzer. Additionally, there was a request for a self-propelled 75 mm howitzer for infantry cannon companies.
We first tried to adapt the chassis of the M3 light tank but the conversion was a failure and it was finally the chassis of the M5 light tank which was chosen. The 75 mm howitzer was mounted in a large open turret above and also equipped with a circular 12.7 mm anti-aircraft machine gun.

The T47 (or T17E1) prototype was finalized and produced by Cadillac Motor Car Division of General Motors Corp. The T47 was accepted for production in 1942 as the M8 75mm Howitzer Motor Carriage. A total of 1778 examples were produced between September 1942 and January 1944.
