History of the Sturmtiger 38 cm RW61 Solido base
Eighteen Sturmpanzer VIs were assembled in Spandau, at Alkett from August to December 1944. This was the reconditioning of Tiger I tanks. This 65-ton vehicle equipped with the 700 hp Maybach HL 230 P 45 engine reached at best 30 km/h.
Five men sat on board, protected by no more than 150 mm of armor. 14 rockets of 345 kg were carried for the Sturm Mörser RW61 L/5.4 of 380 mm which carried to 5650 m. In addition, 600 7.92 mm cartridges equipped the essential MG 34 machine gun.
Tested in Warsaw in 1944, during the crushing of the Ghetto uprising, no target withstood the impacts of the RW61 Rheinmetall-Borsig. Only two companies of armored assault mortars deployed the Sturmtiger, in the Ardennes, then in Germany in 1945.
