History of the Sturmpanzer I 15 cm sIG 33 (Sf)
The chassis of the Pz.Kpfw I Ausf.B also served as the basis for an assault gun intended for infantry, the Sturmpanzer I Bison. This machine was armed with the heavy infantry howitzer, the 150 mm sIG 33 L/11.4. The Sturmpanzer I was operated by a crew of 5 men.
Only three 150 mm projectiles could be carried and the support of an ammunition carrier half-track was necessary.
The howitzer was protected by a large box-shaped superstructure open at the rear and top. A total of only 38 examples were converted in January-February 1940 by Alkett in Berlin.
These machines will provide mobile fire support to the infantry during the campaigns in France, the Balkans and Russia. They will serve until the end of 1943 within Kompanie 704 of the 5th Pz-Division.
