History of the Sturmpanzer 38(t) Assault Gun Grille 38(t) Ausf.H Sd.Kfz.138/1
The chassis of the Marder III Ausf.H tank destroyer will be converted by Alkett into a mobile mount for the 150 mm sIG 33/1 L12 gun.
Like the Marder III this vehicle had a rear mounted engine and a front mounted fighting compartment although this was extended above the engine. These assault guns (Sturmpanzers) were used in the schwere Infanteriegeschütz Kompanies of the Panzergrenadier regiments. They served in Russia, Tunisia, Italy, and France.

In June 1944, 12 examples equipped 2 companies of the 38th Panzer schwere Infanteriegeschütz Abteilung of the 2nd Panzerdivision. These machines will be delivered to the artillery groups of the mechanized infantry regiments in order to provide them with direct fire support.
