History of the Soviet heavy tank - Iraqi T-62

The T-62 is a Soviet assault tank, which appeared in 1961. It is a development of the T-55 and through its armament was a revolution in the field of armor design. It was in fact the first tank to be armed with a smoothbore cannon firing arrow shells at very high initial speed. The rest of the tank was closely derived from the T-55, including the five-large road wheel suspension, no return roller, power unit and general layout. Two details nevertheless allow it to be distinguished from its predecessor, the presence of a smoke extractor two-thirds of the barrel and the wider spacing of the third and fourth road wheels on the suspension.

The tank was designed by the Kartsev design bureau in Nizhnyi Tagil under the designation Obiekt 166. The Red Army accepted it as a production model in mid-1961 and a pre-series of twenty-five examples was built before then. the end of the year, with mass production not beginning until mid-1962 at the Vagonka factory. It was shown publicly for the first time in May 1965 during a military parade in Moscow. Production continued until 1975 with twenty thousand examples, but fifteen hundred examples were also built in Czechoslovakia between 1973 and 1978 and one thousand examples in North Korea at the end of the 1970s.
