History of the Sherman Flail Crab Mine Clearance Solido Base

The Sherman “Crab” was a standard battle tank to which a mine-clearing device was added. This accessory consisted of two spars fixed to the sides of the tank and carrying a rotating metal frame on which were fixed chains which violently whipped the ground to cause the mines to explode.

However, this flail system had two limits: mine clearance was carried out at a speed of around 3 km/h and the rapid wear of the chains tended to reduce the effectiveness of the device.
