History of the Solido-based Sherman BARV

Among all the special vehicles designed for the Normandy landings, the Sherman BARV stands out for its very specific silhouette and has nothing to do with other combat vehicles.

After the experience of the landings in North Africa and Italy it was decided to create a vehicle specially equipped to operate on the beaches in order to refloat the barges and repair vehicles damaged or stranded near the shore. This completely waterproof armored vehicle, with its raised superstructure, vents and protected air intakes, could operate in at least 2.50m of water.

Approximately 52 BARVs were ready just in time to participate in the Normandy landings. They are assigned to “Beach Groups”. These machines also participated in the crossing of the Rhine and remained in service until the 1950s.
