History of the Russian Komintern artillery tractor
The need for an all-terrain artillery tractor was expressed by Soviet military authorities in 1930. Between 1934 and 1940, some 1,800 Komintern artillery tractors were assembled.
This 10.5-ton vehicle was based on the mechanical components of the T-24 tank, which was not entirely reliable - these shortcomings were partly rectified, but otherwise, the Komintern's artillery tractor characteristics enabled it to be declared fit for service. A 131 hp 4-cylinder diesel engine enabled the Komintern, manned by two men, to reach speeds of 30 km/h.
The Komintern hauled a wide variety of armaments from the Soviet arsenal, including the 18-ton 203mm B-4 howitzer.
