History of the Renault ED 1914 Automitrailleuse

A hundred "Renault armored" were ordered in 1914 and will be the first large-scale Auto-Mitrailleuse of the French army.
Combat experience quickly demonstrates the inadequacy of the 5 mm armor which does not resist German S bullets but this problem will be quickly resolved with the adoption of armor from Saint-Chamond and by increasing the thickness of the shielding at 5.5 mm.

The Auto-Mitrailleuse versions are assigned to the close protection of 47 mm cannon cars, also mounted on Renault ED chassis, or Peugeot 18 HP Type 146 armed with the 37 mm cannon.
The Renault type ED is armed with an 8 mm St Etienne machine gun on an anti-aircraft chassis.
Mainly painted in artillery gray, some very original camouflages appeared with, among others, 4 shades on a gray background cut out by black borders or landscapes including trees.
