History of the US M10 ammunition trailer
Development of the M10 ammunition trailer was initiated in mid-1941 as the Caisson T8 to provide an ammunition trailer for field artillery. The Chevrolet division of General Motors Corporation designed and built two racers that were tested in early 1942 at the Aberdeen Proving Ground. The test revealed several T8 deficiencies. Chevrolet built two new redesigned drivers, designated Caisson T8E1.
They were assessed Aberdeen and Fort Bragg in mid-1942. After further modification, e.g. The T8E1 was standardized as the M10 Ammunition Trailer in April 1943. The M10 Ammunition Trailer was produced by 3 manufacturers, the Fruehauf Trailer Company, Schlem Bros. INC and Youngstown Steel Door Company. A few thousand trailers were built until 1945. With the first publication on the M10 released in October and November 1943, production probably started already at the end of 1943.
