History of the Panzerfunkwagen Sd.Kfz.263 radio on Solido base
From 1941 to 1943 to 166 heavy armored vehicles of command Sd. Kfz. 263 were produced by Büssing-NAG. A 180 hp Büssing-NAG L8V engine allowed the 8.4 ton machine a maximum speed of 85 km/h. The 138 liters of gasoline allowed 300 km of autonomy.
The 4 crew members were at best protected by 30 mm of steel. A bulky one-piece superstructure housed the radio compartment. A loop antenna and an umbrella antenna on a mast - which could be hoisted to a height of 9 meters using a crank - allowed efficient transmissions. The essential 7.92 mm Rheinmetall MG 34 machine gun with 1100 rounds of ammunition was the vehicle's only weapon.
Fast, handy and reliable, the Sd. Kfz. 263 was highly appreciated by its users. One of the rare faults of this vehicle was its height: 2.90 m which made it easily identifiable.
