History of the Panhard AMD 178B Indochine self-propelled gun
As soon as the Liberation was over, France wanted to get back into the fight alongside the Allies with domestically-sourced equipment. Panhard production was relaunched, with a new model, the AMD 178 B, fitted with a turret manufactured by Fives-Lille and armed with a 47 mm SA 35 cannon, christened FL 1. This self-propelled gun, known as the Panhard 178 B, saw service in France and overseas territories. Operation "Karamako", commanded by Commandant Marlic and his deputy, Captain Le Duc, in June 1952, involving the II/6th RIC, the 3/5th BCC and the 1erpeloton of the I/5th RSM.
The "Karamako" operation began with the launching of M2 barges on the Giang Thanh river and their mooring at the Giang Thanh post, followed by the progression of the men of the II/6th RIC through sometimes difficult terrain (forest and swampy area), the search and burning of a Viet Minh camp, their arrival on the coast where they took breaks, the crossing of the Kos Sla stung (river) in rubber dinghies, their progress through dense forest, the pepper plantations of the Raung Veng region, then through swamps, an artillery intervention linked by radio, the Kompong Trach post held by the 3/5th BCC, finally the intervention of the armored patrol of the 1st platoon of the I/5th RSM armed with a self-propelled gun, a scout-car and a half-track, and their halt in a pagoda.
