History of the Medium tank Mk.AWhippet

Designed by Sir William Tritton, 200 Whippets were produced by Foster & Co. from October 1917 onwards. Conceived as a cavalry tank, the Whippet weighed 14 tons (max. armor: 14 mm) and sped along at just over 13 km/h. A quintessentially British original, it was a twin-engine tank: two four-cylinder, air-cooled 45 hp Taylors made it a highly sophisticated vehicle to drive, with one engine per track to master.

The 318 liters of fuel allowed a range of just 65 km. Three to four men crammed into the Whippet Mk. A: a tank commander, a driver and one or two gunners. The armament covered all sectors of the tank and consisted of three to four Hotchkiss 7.7 mm machine guns supplied with a total of 5,400 rounds. Baptism by fire took place on March 26, 1918, and the dazzling action of 96 Whippet Mk. A at Amiens on August 8, 1918 helped break through the German lines. It was the best British tank ever built.
