History of the Leopard 2 A5/A6 tank
The Leopard 2 is a German main battle tank initially developed to replace the M48 Patton used by the Bundeswehr and evolve alongside the Leopard 1 already in service. The Leopard 2 surpassed the latter in the areas of mobility, protection and firepower.
In the early 1970s, following the abandonment of the German-American MBT-70 program (originally intended to provide the two countries with a common tank platform), West Germany, still wanting to replace the M48 Patton, asked the Porsche, Krauss-Maffei and Wegmann groups to work on the project. Version A6 is a version relating to the improvement of 405 Leopard 2 A5, and 185 Leopard 2 NL, between 2001 and 2005, by replacing the 120 mm L44 cannon with the L55 version.
This cannon allows the use of a new, faster Kinetic Energy (LKE) ammunition. The Leopard 2 was used in three combat theaters under the colors of four countries (KFOR in Kosovo, Operation Euphrates Shield in Turkey and Afghanistan (ISAF - International Security Assistance Force)
