History of the Leclerc 140 Terminator tank

The Leclerc tank is the third generation French main battle tank, manufactured at the Roanne arsenal by Nexter, formerly Giat Industries, until July 2008. It takes its name from Marshal Leclerc.

Despite a very long development, it became the only main battle tank of the French armored forces, making it possible to replace the AMX-30 B2. It is a French response to the German KWS III prototype and the American CATTB demonstrator.

The turret was lengthened to house an imposing 140 mm smoothbore cannon. Weighing 60 tonnes, it carries 31 shells, a prototype turret was built, the 140 mm gun was manufactured by the Establishment of Studies and Manufacturing of Armament of Bourges (EFAB, today Nexter Center of Bourges).
