History of the Panzerjäger Marder III Ausf.H 7.5 cm Pak40
The Marder III based tank destroyer based on the Pz.Kpfw 38(t) was produced in two models: the Marder III Ausf.H and the Marder III Ausf.M. The Marder III ausf.H was based on the chassis of the Panzerkampfwagen 38(t) Ausf.H and designated 7.5 cm PaK40/3 auf Pz.Kpfw 38(t) Ausf.H or Panzerjäger 38(t) mit 7.5 cm PaK40/ 3 Ausf.H. It was armed with the 75 mm PaK 40/3 L/46 anti-tank gun.
The crew of the Marder III ausf.H was 4 men: the pilot in the forward cockpit, the commander, and two gunners in the center battle station. The Marder III's engine was always installed in a rear engine compartment.
The fighting compartment was open above and behind and accommodated the 75mm cannon with a large shield protecting the front and sides. The armor of the Marder III Ausf.H varied between 8 and 50 mm. BMM manufactured 243 examples of the Marder III Ausf.H between November 1942 and April 1943, followed by 175 Pz.Kpfw 38(t)s converted in 1943.
The Marder III Ausf.H was used in the Panzerjäger Abteilungen at the end of 1942. It was also found in units of the Waffen SS such as the LSSAH or the Luftwaffe such as the Herman Göring Division.
