Envisaged in 2008, the first order for 53 units was placed in December 2009, with delivery of units after trials between the end of 2011 and the end of 2012. When the contract was announced, a total of 129 units were announced. The unit price is 1.7 million euros and the total cost of the contract is 220 million euros, including support. As of July 1, 2017, the French army had 53 VHMs. The VHM is amphibious, which means it can be used for all types of movement (e.g., crossing a swamp and returning to dry land). It equips the French army.
It can be used to transport troops or equipment over difficult terrain. 

It is used by the 2e régiment étranger de génie, the 3e régiment étranger d'infanterie, the 27e bataillon de chasseurs alpins and the 21e régiment d'infanterie de marine. The Logistique version can carry a crew of 3, 2 of whom are FELIN-equipped. It is fitted with a 7.62 machine gun on a PL80 protected ring, and is predisposed for SITEL and PR4G. The rear module includes a hydraulic system for handling removable trays. There are two types of drop deck: either a bare drop deck, which will be used in particular to carry 120 mm mortar, or a drop deck fitted with a "Savoyarde" (sideboards - tarpaulins) for transporting ammunition and freight pallets.
