History of VAB ARLAD
The VAB ARLAD is an anti-drone system mounted on an Armored Forward Vehicle (VAB), developed by the Army Technical Section (STAT), Arquus, and CS Group to respond to the operational emergency posed by the growing threat of drones. This system combines a radar capable of detecting a mini-drone at 2,500 meters, a 40 mm grenade launcher firing Airburst ammunition (effective against swarms of drones), and an intelligent firing system that adjusts trajectories according to weather conditions and target behavior.
After testing in the Sahel in 2021, the VAB ARLAD was validated at the end of 2022 and is now in series production. It has been integrated into the All-Weapons Anti-Aircraft Training Center (LATTA) in Biscarosse, with gradual deployment in artillery regiments.
However, only 12 vehicles will be delivered, a number deemed insufficient to cover all the needs of the ground forces. Despite this limitation, the VAB ARLAD represents a major step forward in the modernization of French defense capabilities against drones.
