History of the Bergepanzer 38(t) Hetzer
The Bergepanzer 38(t) (Sd.Kfz.136) is actually a recovery vehicle based on the Jagdpanzer 38(t) Hetzer or Pz.Kpfw 38(t). The Bergepanzer 38(t) had a roofless superstructure and accommodated a crew of four. For only defense, an MG34 was carried inside. The Bergepanzer 38(t) was equipped with a towing loop at the front and rear.
The old fighting compartment was occupied by a motorized winch. The Bergepanzer 38(t) was also equipped with a wide spade at the rear and a removable stem that could be installed on the left or right. These two pieces of equipment could be coupled to the winch.
Pull-up bars (with a capacity of 30 tonnes) were also available. From October 1944 to May 1945, 170 examples were produced by BMM (Praga/CKD). 64 Hetzers and 106 Pz.Kpfw 38(t) were thus converted.
These machines were incorporated into the Versorgungs Kompanie (Service and Command Company) from November 1944. The Bergepanzer 38(t) was used to tow a light Panzerjäger 38(t) (around 14 tons) but over short distances and on level ground.
