History of the Japanese light tank Type 95 Ha-Go

From 1936 to 1943, 1,161 Type 95 Ha-Go light tanks were produced in Japan by Mitsubishi Jukogyo Kabushiki Kaisha (Mitsubishi Heavy Industry). This 7.4 ton tank was powered by a Mitsubishi NVD 6120, 6-cylinder, 121 hp diesel engine. The Type 95 – reference to the year 2595 of the Japanese calendar, or 1935 for the Western calendar – reached 45 km/h and had a range of 250 km with its 164 liters of diesel.

The three tankers were protected by 6 to 12 mm of armor. Two Type 97 7.7 mm machine guns with 2940 rounds complemented the Type 98 L/37 37 mm cannon supplied with 119 rounds. The fighting compartment was lined with asbestos.

Also called Kyu-Go or 95, this tank was first used in China in 1935, then throughout the “Great East Asian War” until the cessation of hostilities in 1945.
