History of the Jagdpanzer IV L/70 Solido base

The Jagdpanzer IV (A) Zwischenlösung was the last armored vehicle put into service by the German army. Its design dates back to mid-1944 and was intended to adapt the excellent 75 mm L/70 cannon to the Panzer IV chassis. A prototype was ready in July 1944 with a Jagdpanzer IV casemate raised to allow the recoil of the new gun, hence its name Zwischenlösung (intermediate formula in French).

This temporary solution required some adjustments to the first models released in September 1944, such as the adaptation of solid rollers on the two front bogies in order to compensate for the weight and the forward shift in the center of gravity. This armored vehicle proved excellent in its role as tank destroyer, thanks to its armament but was subject to numerous mechanical problems due to its weight and its mounting on a panzer IV chassis which had become almost obsolete at the end of 1944. The Zwischenlösung Panzer IV was built in 278 units until the end of the war and was used on all fronts.
