History of the Semovente 75/18 Italian assault gun
Produced in less than 200 examples between 1941 and 1942 by the Ansaldo factories, this armored vehicle was a real success story for the Italian arsenal. Powered by a 125 hp Fiat V8 diesel engine, the 13.1-ton "Semovente" reached a top speed of 32 km/h on the track and 15 km/h off-road.
Three men were enough to operate this self-propelled artillery vehicle, which proved to be an excellent tank hunter in combat. Indeed, in early 1942, the M34 L/18 short 75 mm gun, equipped with 44 shells, enabled the Italians to defeat Allied armor. In addition, excellent hollow charge ammunition further enhanced anti-tank capabilities. An 8mm Breda M38 machine-gun supplied with 1100 rounds completed the vehicle's armament. The career of the "Semovente" 75/18 began in 1942 in North Africa, and ended after 1945 with the arrival of American replacement equipment.
