History of the Renault FT-17 75BS howitzer tank

The Char Renault FT (often misnamed FT17 or FT-17) was the most effective tracked armored fighting vehicle [ref. needed] of the First World War. Detailed specifications for the Renault FT tank were proposed to the army by Renault as early as November 1916. A first working prototype was tested by Louis Renault before a military commission in March 1917.

This demonstration was followed by two firm orders: the first in April 1917 and the second in June of the same year. Some 3,700 FT tanks rolled off the production line in eighteen months, most of them built by Renault, but also by Berliet, SOMUA and Delaunay-Belleville. The Renault FT was to define the very type of modern battle tank: all-round turret armament, rear-mounted power unit and overhanging tracks at the front. The Renault FT tank was manufactured under license in the USA (950 tanks) from 1918 onwards, then used by the American army during the 1920s-30s under the name "6 Ton Tank". This FT17 features a self-propelled gun with a 75 mm BS (Blockhaus Schneider), and was built with at least 39 tanks.
