Historique du Hanomag Sd.Kfz.251/16 lance-flammes base Solido
347 of these vehicles were assembled from January 1943, mainly by Wumag in Görlitz. The base vehicle was the Sd.Kfz. 251 version C then D. The Maybach HL42 TUKRM with 6 liters of displacement and 100 hp carried the 8.62 tonnes of the 251/16 at 50 km/h.
A 700 liter tank containing gelled gasoline supplied the two 14 mm flamethrowers with a range of 40 meters. 80 throws of 2 seconds per weapon were possible. Two 7.92 mm Rheinmetall MG 34 machine guns with 2010 rounds completed the armament.
The Sdkfz. 251/16 was deployed in 1943 on the Eastern Front, then in Italy and Arnhem. Tactically, the night use of this formidable vehicle was very interesting, in fact, the glow of the flames distorted the aim of the enemy anti-tank gunners, thus, losses during night operations remained very reduced.
