History of the GMC Float Door for Treadway M2 bridge Solido base
This type of engineering bridge made it possible to cross any length of water, the length being adjustable. Two metal tracks ran on a succession of sturdy rubber and metal floats measuring 10.32 meters long by 2.54 m wide. The capacity of the bridge was up to 40 tonnes. Well-trained personnel could at best advance the construction of the bridge by almost 30 meters per hour.
The modular design of this type of bridge made the destruction by the enemy of such a structure very difficult. Additionally, a direct impact was often required to sink a float. In combat, bridges of more than 300 meters launched across the Rhine remained afloat, despite several fewer floats.
Used for the first time in Europe during the Second World War, this equipment was also used in Korea in the early 1950s.
