History of the Tamiya-based GMC M12 self-propelled 155 mm
The M-12 was one of the first self-propelled artillery guns ever designed. To create this new vehicle from the M-3 tank, the power unit was moved forward to free up space for the combat compartment at the rear of the body. This made it possible to fit the M1917 or M1918 155 mm gun. To absorb the weapon's recoil, a spade attached to the rear of the M-12 was lowered to the ground.
Only around one hundred of these self-propelled guns were produced, due to the shortage of M1917/1918 guns. The six-man crew was protected by 10 to 25 mm thick armor. In combat, the formidable M-12 proved its worth by providing effective, mobile fire support for Allied forces. The firepower of the 155 mm gun could even pierce more than 1.80 m of concrete.
