History of the German RH18 105mm howitzer
Developed in 1929 and produced from 1935 until the end of the war by Rheinmetall, the “leichte Feldhaubitze 18” (light field howitzer) was a remarkable weapon. This weapon weighed 1985 kg, its total length was 6.10 meters, its width 1.98 meters and its height 1.88 meters. The FH Gr. high-explosive shell weighing 15.81 kg had an initial speed of 540 m/s and a maximum range of 10.6 km. A seasoned team could achieve a rate of fire of 7 rounds/minute.
The “le.FH 18” was used for indirect fire but could on occasion be used effectively in direct fire against moving targets. The success of the German 105 howitzers is reflected by their number produced: 4,845 units in 1939 to total more than 185,000 at the start of 1945.
