Historique du char lourd allemand A7V WWI

In response to the appearance of the first British tanks at the end of 1916, the Imperial Army obtained the A7V. A hundred tanks were ordered, but only 20 were delivered by Daimler-Benz from October 1917. This 30-ton tank was powered by two Daimler-Benz engines, each rated at 100 hp, giving it a maximum road speed of 10 km/h. Armor thickness varied from 20 to 30 mm.

The A7V's armament included no less than six 7.92 mm Maxim machine guns supplied with 36,000 rounds of ammunition, a flamethrower and a 57 mm rapid-fire cannon with 180 shells. The maximum number of occupants was 18 crew members.

The A7V's baptism of fire took place in Saint-Quentin, in the Aisne region, at the end of March 1918. Although superior to French and British tanks in many respects, mechanical unreliability and poor trench-crossing ability prevented the A7V from making its mark on the battlefield.
