History of the French heavy tank Saint Chamond 1917
400 heavy tanks were produced from the beginning of 1917 to May 1918 by the Saint-Chamond factories. The 22 tons of the tank were driven by a 90 hp Panhard 4-cylinder thermal engine which powered two electric motors. The maximum speed was 8 km/h, the range was 60 km.
The eight tankers were protected at most by 17 mm of steel. 4 Hotchkiss 8 mm machine guns equipped with 7488 cartridges supplemented the 75 mm model 1897 cannon supplied with 106 rounds. The 7.2 kg shell had an initial speed of 539 m/s, a range of 6850 m.
The baptism of fire of the Saint-Chamond took place in Laffaux on May 5, 1917. In operation, the tank proved to be clumsy due to its weight and its large overhang. However, despite its real potential, although difficult to exploit, this tank was withdrawn from the first line in 1918. Many examples were reconverted into troop or ammunition transports.
