History of the Flakpanzer 38(t) auf Selbstfahrlafette 38(t) Ausf M (Sd.Kfz.140)
On October 15, 1943, Adolf Hitler agreed to the production of an interim Flakpanzer based on the 38(t) before the introduction of a real Flakpanzer based on the PzKpfw IV chassis. This version was armed with the 20mm Flak 30 or Flak 38 L/112.5 (with 1040 rounds of ammunition) based on the PzKpfw 38(t) Ausf.L/M.
The armor was weak and from November 1943 to February 1944, only 141 were produced by BMM (Praga/CKD) out of an order of 150. The first 87 units were put into service in January 1944 as part of Flugabwehrzug units ( anti-aircraft platoons) of Panzerdivisions and Panzer Grenadier Divisions. Only nine Gepards were still in service on December 1, 1944.
