History of the Flakpanzer 38 (t)Sd.Kfz.140 Gepard
On October 15, 1943, Hitler agreed to the conversion of 150 Pz chassis. 38(t). From November 1943 to February 1944, BMM produced 141 “Gepard”. A 158 hp six-cylinder Praga AC/2 engine propelled the 9.8 tonnes of this vehicle to 42 km/h. The 320 liters of fuel allowed 210 km of autonomy.
The five tankers were at best protected by 20 mm of steel. The “Flugabwehrkanone 2 cm 38 L/112.5” weapon manufactured by Rheinmetall weighed 420 kg. The 20 mm shells came out at a practical rate of 220 rounds/min, at a speed of 900 m/s, the maximum ceiling reached 3700 m. 1040 shells were carried (720 explosives, 320 anti-tank). 20 shells filled a magazine.
This first generation “Flakpanzer” was presented to Hitler on December 16, 1943. The DCA sections of the tank regiments of the Panzer Divisions received the “Gepard” in January and February 1944. This self-propelled DCA was mainly used in the West.
