History of the Merkava Mk.3D LIC tank
The Merkava is Israel's main battle tank. Entirely local in design, it was developed with the main objective of protecting and surviving the crew. It features spaced armor, a fire-fighting system, and a low, slender silhouette. Unlike other tanks of its generation, the engine is placed at the front, offering both additional protection from the front and the possibility of evacuating the tank from the rear.
Appeared in 1979 during the first Lebanon war, it was manufactured in Israel, which is its only user. The unit price of a Merkava 4 tank was estimated at 5.1 million US dollars in March 2006. Entering service in 1990, the Mk III, unlike the Mk II, brings real innovations. First of all, it is entirely built in Israel (except its engine), which in spirit corresponds well to the technological maturity that the military industry was looking for.
The armor becomes modular, meaning that certain parts can be replaced quickly so that the tank can return to combat quickly.
The chains installed on the rear part of the turret are intended to detonate the shaped charge shells so that they do not reach the neck of the turret.
