History of the Bergepanther Solido base recovery tank

The increase in the tonnage of German tanks during the war made the towing of broken down vehicles more and more problematic, not to mention the ability to lift increasingly heavy engines. Thus the Panther recovery vehicles were started under the name “Panzer-Bergerät (Panther I)(Sd.Kfz. 179)”.
In mid-1943, the project to transform certain Panthers into recovery tanks led to a first, simply cut-out series. Henschel then Demag, in July 43 and February 44 respectively, began to produce the Bergepanther series. Thus type G, D and A chassis were used in the proportion of 107 Ausf G, 232 Ausf A and 82 Ausf D (including the first twelve simply cut out).

In the specifications of the new Bergpanther, the most innovative part was the installation of a winch which had to have a traction force of 40 tonnes over a cable length of 150 meters. The appearance of the Bergpanther dates back to Kursk.
