History of the WESPE 105 mm Sd.Kfz.124 self-propelled gun Solido base
The FAMO company produced a self-propelled artillery with the chassis of the PzKpfw II and the light 105 mm howitzer Feldhaubitze 18. Named "Wespe" -wasp, this vehicle measured 4.81 m long, 2.28 m wide and 2.30 m high. The 105 mm caliber weapon developed by the Rheinmetall firm weighed 1985 kg and sent a 14.8 kg shell at most 10.675 km with an initial speed of 470 m/s.
The “Wespe” carried 32 105mm shells. The essential MG 34 machine gun provided close protection for the vehicle. Parallel to the production of 682 “Wespe” between 1943 and mid-1944, 158 “Wespe” ammunition transports (howitzer removed) carrying 90 shells were delivered to the Wehrmacht. Effective and easy to use, the “Wespe” enjoyed great popularity among its users. In operation, up to five batteries of six “Wespe” could equip a battalion.
