History of the APX 47 mm SA37 anti-tank gun

The Model 1937 47 mm gun is an anti-tank gun used by the French artillery during the Second World War. The origin of the Model 1937 47 anti-tank gun can be traced back to the Model 1885 47mm naval gun, which after modernization became the 47mm infantry anti-tank gun in 1934.

Abandoned by the infantry in favor of the 25mm Hotchkiss anti-tank gun, the gun was taken over by the artillery and became, in December 1936, the "matériel de 47 modèle 1937". Its ballistic qualities, both in terms of accuracy and perforation capacity, made it one of the most effective guns of its day, capable of destroying all tanks in service at the time.
