History of the Borgward IV demolition machine

616 Borgward IV Ausführung A were produced from May 1942 to June 1943. A 36 hp Opel Olympia gasoline engine propelled this 3.6 ton vehicle at best at 38 km/h.

A driver could direct this machine, this was then done by means of a radio link (effective range 800 to 1000 meters) during the critical phase of the final approach. The maximum armor thickness was 8 mm. The 500 kg delayed explosive charge carried at the front was deposited by the charge-laying machine which then had to be folded up promptly.

The use of Sd.Kfz. 301 "Ladungslager" or "Ladungsträger" began in May 1942 in Sevastopol and continued until the end of the conflict in May 1945. This machine was used by the "Funklenk" (radio guidance) units to destroy either bunkers, artillery positions or infantry positions, or to provide passages in minefields.
