History of the Berliet GPE4 tank transporter
Berliet is a French carmaker, founded by Marius Berliet in 1901. Originally, Berliet specialized in automobiles, particularly luxury cars, until 1939.
From 1946 onwards, Berliet's main activity was in heavy trucks.

The GPE is a tank-lift truck specially designed for use on moderately uneven terrain. Only 2 GPE3s were built, but they were slightly modified and adapted to carry different types of light tanks. In early 1939, 20 examples were ordered under the new designation GPE4.
It was this latter vehicle, with no further modifications, that was retained in the wartime program. After an initial two-month delay, the first 12 GPE4s were delivered between May 20 and June 2, 1940.
